چکیده

'Intermittent claudication' of the spinal cord was first described by Dejerine in 1911. In 1961, Blau and Logue described an unsual syndrome resulting from central protrusion of a lumbar intervertebral disc which gave rise to symptoms suggesting 'intermittent claudication of the cauda equina'. Since this report, a further series of cases has been described by Evans (1964). We have recently observed five cases of cauda equina compression in which the symptoms and signs were evoked or accentuated by exertion. Three patients were shown to have central disc protrusions in the lumbar region as described by Blau and Logue (1961). The purpose of this report is to describe two further patients with intermittent claudication of the cauda equina who presented with similar clinical features but in whom the radiological and operative findings were unusual.

Intermittent priapism in degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis: case report.

BACKGROUND Symptomatic lumbar spinal stenosis produces gradually progressive back and leg pain with standing and walking, relieved by sitting or lying. One of the uncommon symptoms is involuntary intermittent penile erection due to spinal canal stenosis. This symptom is very rare and often forgotten when history is taken. METHODS In this case report, a patient suffering from intermittent pria...

Imaging of cauda equina edema in lumbar canal stenosis by using gadolinium-enhanced MR imaging: experimental constriction injury.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE It has been reported that disturbance of blood flow arising from circumferential compression of the cauda equina by surrounding tissue plays a major role in the appearance of neurogenic intermittent claudication (NIC) associated with lumbar spinal canal stenosis (LSCS). We created a model of LSCS to clarify the mechanism of enhancement within the cauda equina on gadoliniu...

Effects of lumbar acupuncture stimulation on blood flow to the sciatic nerve trunk--an exploratory study.

INTRODUCTION Acupuncture may have a role in the treatment of intermittent claudication of the cauda equina due to lumbar spinal canal stenosis. The aim of this study was to explore the possible physiological mechanisms. METHODS In a laboratory experiment, manual acupuncture was performed at a point adjacent to the sixth lumbar vertebra of 13 animals and its effect on sciatic nerve blood flow ...

Lumbar spine stenosis: a common cause of back and leg pain.

Lumbar spine stenosis most commonly affects the middle-aged and elderly population. Entrapment of the cauda equina roots by hypertrophy of the osseous and soft tissue structures surrounding the lumbar spinal canal is often associated with incapacitating pain in the back and lower extremities, difficulty ambulating, leg paresthesias and weakness and, in severe cases, bowel or bladder disturbance...

Spinal stenosis, a cause of cauda equina compression.

In 1934 Mixter and Barr described the syndrome of the ruptured intervertebral disc in the lumbar region. Since then the herniated intervertebral disc has been considered to be the dominant cause of low back pain and sciatica. In 1953 Schlesinger and Taveras pointed out that in the presence of a narrow spinal canal patients with herniated intervertebral discs may present an atypical picture of m...
